On Second Thought, Maybe Not...
Apr 22, 2008: by Stan
Whoops. It seems that chapter 2 isn't starting today. Well let me be right upfront here. It's not going to start. At all. Yes, I'm pulling the plug on the Devil's Gate webcomic. No, I'm not going to start talking about another relaunch date or anything like that. There is no relaunch, this isn't another hiatus.

Sorry to be so sudden with this. I know it seems like I've been very cheerful on the website since the restart in March. And truth be told I am cheerful. I'm not actually sad. But at the same time I'm not pleased with how the Devil's Gate currently stands on many levels.

But first off, let me say that the Devil's Gate isn't dead to me. I know that sounds a bit selfish and a little bit of a contradiction from what I just said, but I mean it. I'm not actually giving up on the Devil's Gate, but after 3 and a half years the story has become a bit convoluted and I think it's time for some major remodeling.

There is no one person to blame for that. And I know that I deserve probably most of the blame, but what can I say, I've been a slave to the status quo. Some things about the story I really love. But there's many things, including some of this past chapter 1, that I didn't really like at all. Things were included simply for tradition's sake, in that they were in the original chapter 1, or because for some reason I still felt some slavish devotion to the original spirit of certain things that was in Charles' version of the script (FYI, Charles was the original DG writer, he left in 06, long story), or because I had this narrow and dogged determination to explain too much upfront this time around.

Also when we did the relaunch the last time the focus was on better character interaction, which while we did succeed a little more, we didn't really work on changing up the plot. Basically the synopsis of chapters 1 and 2 are identical to the first versions in general. A lot of this is because we felt we owed it to our old fans to keep it in line with the first version. Again, this is completely my fault. And it's not a knock so much on Charles' old work, it's more that I'm NOT Charles, and I should have focused more on going in my own directions than trying to fake my way through his.

I'm also not happy with this "illustrated story" format. I never really was. It's a compromise. Between my ego that wouldn't let anyone else handle any art duties and my common sense that realized I couldn't keep up with the schedule of drawing (inking, and coloring) a comic. But I can't shake the desire to have it as a comic, or (in my wildest dreams) an actual TV show.

So that's what I'm going to do. I'm taking this story line (which has long been codenamed "the Naye Story") and reworking on it from the ground up. As well as developing a few other Devil's Gate stories I've had. I'm going to work and develop them into full fleshed out plots. And I'm going to admit my limits and actually try to find real artists that would like to work with me and we're going to try to get the Devil's Gate made into a real comic book series, or graphic novel. I'm also going to study more on screenwriting (knew I saved those college text books for something) and actually work towards developing a pitch for a Devil's Gate tv series. I figure if I really work towards both, at least one should take off. Hopefully. And if not, then I at least can say I've been putting my effort into doing with the DG what I've always wanted to do.

So where does that leave devils-gate.com? Well for the time being it's going to act as a shrine of the past Devil's Gate webcomic work. Eventually it's also going to serve as sort of a behind the scenes place for me to rant about what I've been doing with the DG. As well as a place to put up new artwork that I do (or that others do). I may even throw up a little comic strip here and there if I fancy it.

So what can I say? I don't want to ask anybody to stay tuned. It's just not fair and slightly deluded to expect anyone to keep paying attention to this site. But, I do want to say Thank You to those that have read, supported, and/or enjoyed the Devil's Gate at any point over the past three years.

But to ask anyone to keep following it's exploits is far fetched. So simply, I shall bid you adieu, and if you ever see a Devil's Gate comic in the comic shop or at Barnes & Noble, or catch a tv ad for a Devil's Gate show, then I hope you take the time to check it out.

Goodbye for now everyone.

Chapter 1 is in the books
Apr 8, 2008: by Stan
Yep, chapter 1 is now finished. Yaaaay! I hope everyone's happy with how it turned out.

Now, as will be custom, we'll be taking a two week break before we start chapter 2. Normally it'd be two complete weeks between the last section of a chapter and the first section of the next chapter, but since there's only one section this week, this week counts as one of the weeks off.

The chapter 2 cover will be put up next week on the 15th, and chapter 2 will fully begin on April 22nd.

So take this break to reread chapter 1 and let us know what you think, and we'll see you on April 22nd!

The Subspace Emissary is a Dick
Apr 1, 2008: by Stan
Yes the title is a reference to Super Smash Bros. Brawl. No I'm not going to talk about it. What is there to talk about really? SSBB is one of those games that nothing could sway whether somebody's going to buy it or not.

But anyway, Section 20 is up! Other than that, not much is going on. Work and plague is still kicking Thwack's ass and I continue to plod along working on upcoming sections. Sorry if this all sounds kind of bland. Blame it on the dreary weather that has been covering much of Central Virginia all weekend.

There is something to be excited about though. As stated on our Upcoming Dates section on the Communication page, chapter 1 wraps up next Tuesday! I consider it a pretty momentous occasion. Especially when you consider that it took us seven months last year to do the first half of the chapter, and it took us just one month to do the second half this year. To me, that justifies completely my decision to go with the new illustrated story format. I hope everyone's enjoying the new wealth of content for the Devil's Gate. I know it's a little weird to get a handle on still, but I'm still confident that in the long run being able to go as fast as we can now will pay off.

Yep, It's the Return of the Pink
Mar 27, 2008: by Stan
With yesterday's section 18 update, indeed the pink-haired one has returned to the Devil's Gate. Anyone that might still be around from that long ago might remember that during our very original run (3/2005-3/2007) Naye was arguably the most popular character of the cast. We'll see if that proves true once more.

And just for the record, Youmi is my favorite character. By a looooong shot. Why else would she be the main character?

A Specific Day, in Fact
Mar 25, 2008: by Stan
Hmm. Let's see, let's see. I promised to try to post news updates on Tuesdays. But I have nooooothing to talk about, except for section 17 being up of course. Soo, something to talk about. Let's see.... Oh, I can do a mini recommendation of another webcomic! (What? It's late and I have nothing to talk about. If you want to read go read section 17 already)

*rummage*

Ah, here we go. Go check out Another Random Day (NSFW)Everyone. The best way I think I can describe Another Random Day would be XKCD meets 4-Chan. It's done in very simple stick figure drawings. Basically the figures just stand around telling puns and/or mocking each other. The jokes are generally very tasteless and you may cringe as much as laugh the first couple times you read them (depending on how much exposure to 4-Chan you've had). But once you've built up a tolerance to the horridness of it you'll find that there are a lot of just really hilarious strips to be found.

So, if your humor (and soul) are in the gutter, go read Another Random Day, it will definitely deliver a giggle or two. Even if you feel bad about laughing at some of the jokes.

Out To Lunch
Mar 21, 2008: by Thwack
Hey all. Just a quick note to let everyone know that the reason I've kind of been scarce these last few days is due to a combination of work and being sick. Don't worry, you'll all hear from me a lot more than you have in the past.

I also wanted to let everyone know that the avatars and buddy icons should come back up sometime next week. I've been wanting to get them up sooner, but with the way I've been feeling I can't promise to have them done before then. There will also be a whole bunch of smaller updates coming soon, such as the return of the RSS and a few other tweaks I want to keep as a surprise.

Anyway, hope everything has been going good with everyone and that you're enjoying the new format for the story. Laters.

Sprucing up the Forum
Mar 18, 2008: by Stan
No, my title doesn't mean we're magically bringing Spruce back to the forum. I wish! Instead, I've updated the images a tad in an attempt to clean the look up a bit. Also, it now has the same background as the rest of the Pink Towel family of sites. So, even though the forum is currently mostly abandoned, hopefully when/if people do start using it it'll be all pretty for them.

In other news, WebcomicZ was super awesome and put up some avatars of the Devil's Gate on their site! We'll have our avatars back up on our site soon enough, but it's still really cool of WebcomicZ to feature them on their site.

Just So You Know...
Mar 13, 2008: by Stan
Don't expect us to post news updates every day that sections update. Worry not, the sections will keep updating 3 times a week on Tuesdays, Wednedays, and Thursdays, but let's be honest, there's not always going to be a enough news going on for us to put up news posts on all those days. So don't take a lack of news posts for a lack of section updates. They're there, you just have to click the "Read Newest Section" button directly to the right. Or go in through the "Read the Story" nav heading.

Basically, I'll make sure to post a news update every Tuesday, but other than that, we'll post up news when required.

Also, I should point out that all our updates run on United States West Coast time. Why? Because that's what time our server runs off of, that's why. And we always update right at midnight, which means 3:00 am on the U.S. East Coast, 7 AM in London, 8 AM in Vienna, 12:30 PM in New Delhi, 4 PM in Seoul and Tokyo, 6 PM way down in Sydney, etc. If you need to know what time U.S. West Coast is for you, then just visit here.

The Z Stands for Awesome
Mar 12, 2008: by Stan
No, I haven't lost my mind. I'm fully aware that nowhere in the word "awesome" does the letter "z" appear. No, what I'm actually referring to is newish webcomic directory WebcomicZ. It seems like it's shaping up to be a pretty cool site indeed. It's part top list, part directory, with some social site features and some comic goodies tossed in for good measure.

I'd say they're definitely worth checking out. Being so new there's still plenty of opportunity to contribute to propagating their webcomic list, as you don't need to be the creator to do so. I did add the DG to it though already. Like you'd expect anything less of me. Heh.

Change of Heart
Mar 11, 2008: by Stan
Hey everyone. Whoo-man, we have to post news on a regular basis again. This is going to take some re-getting used to. Anyway, chapter 1, section 11 is up for your reading enjoyment!

Also, after discussing it this weekend, Thwack and I have decided to put the wiki version of the Encyclopedia back up for the time being. We still fully intend to make a new encyclopedia section, mainly because wikimedia can be a little unwieldy and bloated due to a lot of features we don't really want anyway. Don't get me wrong, it's an okay piece of software, it's just not quite what we're looking for.

However, with all the work still left to be done on some of our other Pink Towel projects Thwack won't be able to work on any kind of new Encyclopedia for quite a bit still. And we figure why go all this time without one, when we already have one. Even if it is a bit slow. It's still better than nothing correct?

So for the time being the wiki Encyclopedia it is. You can normally find it under the Read the Story section labeled as "Explore the DG Universe.

Remember, tomorrow section 12 will be up, and then section 13 on Thursday!

After Making it Through the 3rd Year, We're Ready for Anything!
Mar 8, 2008: by Stan

Welcome one and all to the Devil's Gate.com, version EIGHT! And not only that, we are now officially an illustrated story. That's right, it's our third anniversary! Whoo hoo! I invite everyone to take some time to reacquaint themselves with the site, as many things have been moved around.

The site is something of a work in progress. Everything of importance is there, but some features aren't here yet. As you can see, there is no encyclopedia currently. This is because while we were using Wikmedia for it, we haven't been very happy with Wikimedia. It's okay, but we think we can do better. As such, we're still brainstorming on ways to do the encyclopedia again. Never fear though, it will return eventually. Also absent is the RSS feed. Thwack is working on incorporating RSS into the WCAT, but it's not ready yet. Hey, it IS still in alpha stage. The same can be said for comments for our news posts. For now though if you want to contact us feel free to email us or use the forum.

Now that March 8th has finally arrived I'm so happy! With the recent passing of my mother, it's been a very trying week for me, but to see the rebirth of my obsession is a big help to lift my spirits. I understand that it's still a long uphill battle ahead to re-climb the webcomic ladder, but getting back up and running is the first of many steps.

So with the the 3rd anniversary here, it's time to get right down to business. Chapter 0, the Introduction, is up, along with sections 1-10 of Chapter 1. This covers all that we had done as a comic last year, plus a new scene. Don't dally to catch up though, as we're continuing right along. Section 11 will be up on Tuesday, beginning our permanent update schedule of a new section every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

I'm not pushing myself this time though! I really think part of last year's problem was just that I was burnt out, so we're building breaks into our schedule. Expect a roughly 2 week break between each chapter, along with a good 2 - 3 week vacation later this summer. For your benefit, we've added an 'Upcoming Dates' section to the Communication page.

So, despite many set backs in the last year, we have made it to the third year anniversary, and we expect many more anniversaries to come. I hope you all join us for them!

See everyone Tuesday when I should be feeling much better and section 11 goes up!

Random thought... Do we still even fall into webcomic territory? Hmm. I guess time will tell.

OMG, It's Up!!!
Mar 7, 2008: by Thwack
Well, I've gone and done it. I deleted the Devil's Gate site today. "Sure," you say, "these things happen at times"... well, these things don't happen on purpose very often.

Yep, that's right, the new version of devils-gate.com is up and live. Sure, there are still a few things that are needing to be finished off and there's some polishing to do, but after a long time spent coding and playing around, it's finally here.

This re-design is a little different than the ones we've done in the past, as this time the site is actually running under a custom built content management system we've designed from the ground up specifically for webcomics. What's that mean for you the reader? Well, it means that due to the ease of updating we'll be better able to keep all of the site current and not just the comic pages themselves.

This update has another meaning too though. In an effort to give back to the webcomic community that Stan and I have come to love, we're going to release the code that runs this site so that others can make use of it too. A beta version of the project (named wCAT) will be coming soon and all interested webcomic authors are welcome to participate. More info on it will be available on http://wcat.pinktowel.net.

Well, I'm off to hunt for more bugs to squash and tarnish to polish off. Catch ya later.

February Update and a Valentine's Day Comic Redux
Feb 13, 2008: by Stan
Hey everyone! Just stopping by to give a little monthly status report on the Devil's Gate and it's related projects. Before that though, I'm bringing a little gift for everyone. Since it's around Valentine's Day, I thought I would put up last year's V-Day Vote Incentive for everyone to see. You don't even have to vote this time around. It's quite cute, and went over awesomely last year. Last time it was up for a mere 2 days and garnered us some 170 votes, and contributed greatly to last February being our best month on Buzz EVER. So hopefully you can enjoy it again.

Now, onto business. Everything is looking good for our March 8th restart. We've been hard at work getting the new site and new content and everything ready. And by we I mean me and Thwack. I know it seems like he's been absent forever around here, but he's been busy, as he explains here. What's that you ask, a new Pink Towel.net? Why yes it is. As Thwack explains on his post there, the new pinktowel.net makes use of the WCat and Rat Tail web applications he's been working on. Applications that will be implemented in the new Devil's Gate website.

So where does that leave the blogs.pinktowel.net site? In the dust I'm afraid. As per the norm for our site revamps, the news posts will likely be wiped as we start with a fresh new method of posting. Worry not though, until March 8th blogs.pinktowel.net is still THE PLACE to look for Devil's Gate news, and after March 8th it'll remain up for some time to direct people to the appropriate place for DG news. (hint: it's going to be devils-gate.com. Yeah, look to see news posts returning to the front page of the Devil's Gate)

Okay, for those that only cared about the news, you can stop reading, I feel like ranting a little on the year that was for the Devil's Gate. I'll be the first to admit, the Devil's Gate's third year went very poorly. But remembering how it started off, maybe I shouldn't be surprised. I'll be honest, I can't bring the same amount of wide eyed enthusiasm that I did this time last year, when our votes were shooting through the roof and our stats were on a continual upward climb. It's been a trying year for both me AND Thwack, both in terms of the Devil's Gate and real life. I've never wondered if this was worth the time, but I have wondered if I could really continue to do it. And I know that we've been shuffled to the very bottom of the webcomics industry once again. We have a long, uphill battle ahead of us, again. I can tell you, having done it once before, that earning even a modicum of success is excruciatingly hard.

But in a way, that makes me even more hopeful. The fact is WE ARE STILL HERE. I mean, even with the physical rigors of drawing constantly, doing this is EASY when everything is going great. Something I'm sure you could say about most things. But it hasn't been going great. At times over this past year it's been downright terrible. Shit, our year started with our account being suspended! But we're still here, and we plan to be here for a long time to come. Which to me, in some ways is more impressive than what we did in the first two years.

You've Come A Long Way, Baby!
Feb 3, 2008: by Thwack
Hi all, it's me again.

I know that I've seemed absent from the site for a bit now, but there's a reason... progress.

I'm not talking about the type of progress you find in Progress Quest, but instead the type that I've been making on some of the coding projects that I have been working on for the last several months.... coding projects that are coming close to being finished. For those of you who might still remember, we first started playing around with using content management systems to run the site back in summer '05. Sure, it was a nice way to see just how limited I was in coding ability and a good view of exactly why nobody else was using phpNuke to run a webcomic, but it did show me a few ways in which parts of a content management system could help out with a webcomic site.

Since then, we've also taken to running a blog on wordpress, running phpBB forums, and started moving the comic itself over to running off of a SQL database. With these powers combined, our site is Captain Planet... no, I can't back that up. Instead, I have two major projects that are now near completion... WCat and RatTail.

RatTail is what you are seeing here... a custom blogging software written for speed and customization. Instead of trying to be everything for everyone like wordpress, it focuses on being lightweight, fast, and secure. One of the other big goals was to try and make it as easy to customize the look and feel as possible. Although I'm still smoothing out a few of the rough edges, it's coming along nicely.

The second project I've been working on is the big one... WCat. Using the RatTail codebase, WCat is designed to be a webcomic content management system with the speed, power, flexibility, and ease of use required to be a benefit to the webcomic community at large. It's still a little ways from being released, but it will be available shortly.

So yea, I've been coding, but now that things are nearing completion I'm back to say "So, what have I missed?"

Important Announcement Concerning the Devil’s Gate Future!
Jan 11, 2008: by Stan
Hey everyone! Happy belated New Year’s to everyone. Hope everybody is having a good year so far. So here it is everyone, the big news update about the future of the Devil’s Gate. And the first point of the news post (man this sucks to say) is: wait a little longer. Yeah, I know, it’s been… Forever now it seems since the Devil’s Gate stopped, but unfortunately I’m not ready to start it up just yet. The Devil’s Gate shall resume (yep long time readers, I’m sure you’ve already guessed it) March 8th, 2008, our 3 year anniversary. I’m really sorry to anybody who’s actually stuck around waiting, although I’m sure most have (rightfully so) moved on, I’m not toooooo worried. I fully accept that any and all of our previous momentum has gone away now, so I’m looking at this as a fresh start.

So the DG is resuming on March 8th, but what exactly is it that’s coming back? Like I’ve eluded to (or flat out mentioned) before, I don’t think I can, or should, go back to just doing a flat out comic. The main reasons for this still are (a) doing more than 1 a week is viritually impossible for me unless I KILL myself which leads to (b) doing a full comic makes the pacing go to slow. I would love to keep doing it as a full comic, I really would, but it’s just not feasible.

Keeping that in mind, on March 8th the Devil’s Gate will be returning as a Mixed-Media Illustrated Story. Yep, the back bone of the Devil’s Gate will now be written text. I’m going to splice in panels here and there, like real comic panels, not just illustrations, but for the most part it’s just going to be written out. The format of the panels will vary, some will be in black and white, some in color. My ambition is to eventually even have a few little flash things tossed in here and there.

Let me try to answer some possible questions right off. Yes, the content already done in comic form (pages 1 - 30, some parts of chapter 2) will be converted over to this new format. I know, most would prefer we just left them up as they are. Sorry, but I’m a sucker for uniform formatting. But no, this isn’t a relaunch! When we come back March 8th, the same amount of story will be up as there is now and we’ll be picking up where we left off.

Our updating schedule, for only the second time ever, is changing. From March 8th and on, the Devil’s Gate will update on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays of every week. Each day we will put up a new section, which is basically a scene. Why I started titling them sections I have no idea, but that’s just how we roll.

And now that you all know that, let me expound upon why I think this format will work so much better for us in the long run. Well quite simply, it lets me achieve one important thing that I’ve been upset over since the beginning: It lets us get farther in the story faster. Much faster. Like I said, we’re going to be putting up three sections a week, one on Tuesday, one on Wednesday, and one on Thursday. For the average of 12 sections a month. I’m really happy with that.

Let me use the current chapter 1 as an example of why this is going to be awesome. Currently there’s 30 pages up (plus the cover and two introduction pages). Those 30 pages went up over the course of 8 months. So, 3.75 pages a month. Well those 30 pages were basically sections 1 - 9 of chapter 1. And they’re pretty indicative of how big the sections will be, so simple math says that each section is worth about 3.3334 of my comic pages. Let’s just say 3 pages. So under this new format we’ll be putting up the content equivalent of 9 comic pages a week.

Also, as long time readers know, hell, as anyone who looks knows, we’re still in chapter 1, if you take the stuff from the first run of the Devil’s Gate, that means we’ve basically gotten through 2 chapters in 3 years. As an illustrated story, we should get through 6 chapters in the next 1 year alone. Now that’s the kind of pacing I’ve always wanted, and the kind of pacing that, quite frankly, the Devil’s Gate needs.

So, for the few faithful that’s stuck it out this long, THANK YOU. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate everyone that is, and even everyone that was, interested in the Devil’s Gate story. Hopefully by this time in 2009 we’ll be going strong again like we once were. I have a good feeling about this year. Here’s looking forward to March 8th, hope to see some of you there!

– Stan
